North Korea says nuclear test successful
SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea said Monday it had exploded a nuclear weapon for the first time, an underground test that defied international warnings but was hailed by the communist nation as a "great leap forward" for its people.

North Korea has conducted a nuclear weapons test. This is what I heard when I returned from my day of activities in Tsukuba. CNN is my link to the news of this development. The new Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, spoke of World War II, and how it reminds him and others who have lived through the after effects. He also spoke of wanting a partnership with the United States during this situation. That is comforting, yet this situation is a bit unnerving. Being here in Japan, during this time, is certainly a reflective time for me, especially after meeting so many cordial and gracious people. Keep the people of Japan and others in your prayers.
